IGCSE Chinese Language Students' Testimonial

Common Questions About the IGCSE Chinese Language Subject

IGCSE Chinese Foreign Language is a course designed for students who are learning Chinese as a foreign language, meaning they have little to no prior exposure to it. The syllabus focuses on the development of basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, with an emphasis on practical communication.

The course is assessed through four components, each contributing 25% to the final grade: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. It is suitable for students who wish to achieve conversational proficiency without an extensive background in the language.

To prepare for the IGCSE Chinese exam, students should focus on:

  • Completing at least 10–12 past papers to familiarise themselves with exam formats.
  • Dedicate 3–5 hours per week to studying, focusing on all four language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking).
  • Practice vocabulary with 1,000–2,000 commonly used Chinese words.
  • Engage in listening to Chinese media, such as podcasts or news, for 20–30 minutes daily to improve comprehension. Consistent practice in real-life situations and with mock exams will help build both confidence and fluency.

IGCSE Chinese Foreign Language is considered moderate in difficulty compared to other foreign languages due to the complexity of Chinese characters and tones. For students unfamiliar with character-based languages, mastering 1,000–1,500 characters can be challenging. However, the exam structure is designed to assess basic communicative skills rather than fluency, making it accessible for those who invest 3–5 hours of consistent study per week.

Chinese as a Second Language IGCSE is generally considered harder than Chinese Foreign Language. The Second Language syllabus requires a higher level of fluency, including the ability to write essays and comprehend more complex texts, whereas Foreign Language focuses on foundational skills. Students who have some background in Chinese might find Second Language easier, but for complete beginners, the Foreign Language course is typically more manageable.

The best way to study for IGCSE Chinese Foreign Language is to divide your time equally between the four key areas of the exam: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Aim to study for 3–5 hours per week, focusing on practising vocabulary lists and reading basic texts. Use flashcards to learn and recall 1,000–2,000 Chinese characters efficiently, and try speaking with native or fluent speakers for 30 minutes daily to improve conversational skills. Regularly completing past exam papers can help familiarise students with the format and timing of the exam.

The grading system for IGCSE Chinese Foreign Language follows the A to G* grading scale, where A is the highest* and G is the lowest. Each of the four components — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — contributes 25% to the final grade. Students are assessed on their ability to understand and communicate in Chinese at a basic level, with clear benchmarks set for fluency, vocabulary usage, and comprehension.

For college applications, Chinese as a Second Language may hold more weight than Chinese as a Foreign Language because it demonstrates a higher level of proficiency. Colleges often value the depth of language skills, and students who can achieve good grades in the Second Language course may have a stronger application. However, both qualifications are recognized, and for students who are not fluent, taking the Foreign Language exam can still demonstrate a valuable effort in language learning. The decision depends on the student’s existing Chinese proficiency and academic goals.
